Is Star Wars Battlefront 2 Crossplay? (2026 Platform Guide)

    The Short Answer

Yes, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017) is fully crossplay. EA added it in a free update on September 28, 2021 — nearly four years after launch and 18 months after the final content patch.

    PlatformCrossplay?
    PlayStation 4✅ Yes
PlayStation 5✅ Yes (via PS4 version)
    Xbox One✅ Yes
Xbox Series X / S✅ Yes (via Xbox One version)
    PC — Origin / EA App✅ Yes
    PC — Steam✅ Yes
PC — Epic Games Store✅ Yes
Nintendo Switch❌ Game was never released on Switch

Everyone shares the same matchmaking pool. There is no "console only" or "PC only" filter — if you want to avoid PC players entirely, you have to disable crossplay completely.

Which Battlefront 2 Are You Asking About?

Two different games share this title — only one has crossplay:

    • Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) — EA / DICE / Criterion / Motive. The modern game most people mean. Has crossplay.
    • Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) — Pandemic Studios. The classic. Does NOT have crossplay, even in its 2017 Steam/GOG re-release. Steam multiplayer only.

The rest of this guide is about the 2017 EA version.

How to Enable (or Disable) Crossplay

Crossplay is on by default for every new account. To change it:

    1. Launch Star Wars Battlefront 2
    2. Main menu → Options
    3. Network tab
    4. Crossplay → toggle On / Off
    5. Back out — change applies on the next match search

Turning crossplay off will significantly increase your queue times, especially in lower-population modes like Heroes vs Villains, Hero Showdown, and Co-Op. EA added crossplay specifically because cross-platform population pooling was the only way to keep matches filling in 2021+.

    Does Battlefront 2 Have Cross-Progression?

No. Crossplay lets you party up with friends on different platforms — but your account, credits, character levels, skins, weapon unlocks, and Star Cards do not transfer. If you play 500 hours on PS5 and then switch to PC, you start over from scratch.

This is the single biggest complaint about EA's crossplay implementation. Cross-progression has never been added and almost certainly never will be — EA ended Battlefront 2 development support in April 2020.

    Cross-Input Mixing (Controller vs Mouse-and-Keyboard)

Battlefront 2 does not separate input methods. A console player using a controller can be matched against a PC player using mouse-and-keyboard in the same lobby. EA does not enforce input-based matchmaking the way some competitive shooters do (Call of Duty, Fortnite ranked).

If you're on a controller and feel outgunned by PC players, your only option is to disable crossplay entirely.

    How to Identify Player Platforms

In the scoreboard and squad menu, a small icon appears next to each player's username indicating their platform: a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC icon. This is useful for:

    • Knowing who you can add to a cross-platform party
    • Reporting suspected cheaters (the cheat ecosystem is overwhelmingly on PC)
    • Coordinating with friends who switched platforms

Why Did EA Add Crossplay So Late?

Battlefront 2 launched in November 2017 to a notoriously rough reception (the loot box controversy that briefly involved national gambling regulators). EA committed to free post-launch content through April 2020, then ended development. By 2021, queue times had gotten bad enough on every platform that a server merge became necessary — crossplay was that merge, just done cleanly.

Crossplay made the player base feel three times larger overnight. Five years later, it's the single biggest reason Battlefront 2 is still playable in 2026.

    What About Battlefront 1 (2015)?

The original Star Wars Battlefront (2015) does NOT have crossplay. It never received the update. PS4, Xbox One, and PC matchmaking are all separate, and the game's population is now low enough that you may struggle to find matches outside Galactic Assault during peak hours.

    Bottom Line

If you bought Battlefront 2 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or PC — yes, you can play with anyone else on any of those platforms. Crossplay is on by default. Queue times are reasonable. The only real downside is that progression doesn't follow you across platforms.
