Is LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Multiplayer? (Co-Op Guide)
The Short Answer
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is local 2-player split-screen co-op only.
- ✅ Local couch co-op — 2 players, same console, two controllers
- ❌ No online multiplayer
- ❌ No online co-op
- ❌ No LAN play
- ❌ No cross-platform play
- ❌ No 3 or 4 player co-op (max is 2)
If you and a friend want to play through The Skywalker Saga together, you both need to be in the same room.
How Split-Screen Works
When player 2 joins, the screen splits dynamically based on how far apart the two players are:
- Standing close together → single shared screen
- Moving apart → screen splits (vertically by default, or horizontally if you prefer)
- Cross hub areas → independent split screens
- Entering a story mission together → unified or split as needed
This dynamic split is one of the smoother implementations in the LEGO game lineup — most modern reviewers (IGN, Eurogamer, Polygon) called it out as a quality-of-life win at launch.
How to Add Player 2
| Platform | Player-2 button | |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | + (Plus button) | |
| PlayStation 5 / PS4 | Options | |
| Xbox Series X\ | S / Xbox One | Menu |
| PC (Steam / Epic) | Enter (or controller equivalent) |
Player 2 can drop in and drop out at any time, even mid-mission. Their character picker pulls from whatever player 1 has unlocked.

Platforms That Support Local Co-Op
Every platform that runs the game supports 2-player split-screen:
| Platform | Local Co-Op | Online |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | ✅ | ❌ |
| PlayStation 4 | ✅ | ❌ |
| Xbox Series X / S | ✅ | ❌ |
| Xbox One | ✅ | ❌ |
| Nintendo Switch | ✅ | ❌ |
| PC — Steam | ✅ | ❌ |
| PC — Epic Games Store | ✅ | ❌ |
There is no exclusive online mode on any platform.
Workarounds for "Online" Co-Op
If your friend isn't in the same room, you have three (imperfect) options:
1. Steam Remote Play Together (PC)
Owner launches the game in solo mode, then invites a friend through Steam. Steam streams the second player's controller input and a slice of the screen over the internet. Works surprisingly well on low-latency connections (under 30 ms). Friend doesn't need to own the game.
2. PlayStation Share Play
Owner launches the game, starts a Share Play session, hands "Player 2 controller" to a friend over PSN. Sessions are capped at 1 hour but can be restarted. Both players need PlayStation Plus.
3. Xbox Cloud-Streaming Co-Op via Discord
Works similarly to Steam Remote Play but routed through Discord screen share + virtual controller software. Less stable, not officially supported.
None of these are true online co-op — they're all "remote couch co-op." Latency, video compression, and split-screen visibility are all worse than a native multiplayer mode would be.
Why No Online Multiplayer?
TT Games developers cited two reasons in interviews around the April 2022 launch:
- Open-hub structure made networking impractical. Skywalker Saga has 23 fully explorable hub planets and free-roam character switching, which is much harder to network than the linear corridor design of older LEGO games.
- Polish was prioritized over features. The game was already delayed multiple times. Adding online would have meant another full year of QA on top of an already long dev cycle.
TT Games has since been reorganized, and Warner Bros. has not announced any post-launch online patch. There is effectively zero chance online co-op gets added at this point.
Can Save Files Be Shared Between Players?
Not across consoles. Within one console, all session progress (story missions, Kyber Bricks, unlocked characters, ship parts, Studs) saves to player 1's profile. Player 2 just contributes — they don't get their own save.
If you and a friend each own the game on different consoles, you cannot start a save on one and continue it on the other. There is no cloud save sharing between players.
Bonus: The Switch Version
The Nintendo Switch port:
- Runs at roughly 540p docked and 360p handheld in busier scenes
- Background detail and shadow quality are reduced
- Loading times are longer between hub planets
- 2-player local co-op works identically to other platforms
- Joy-Con sideways is supported for player 2, which makes it ideal for portable couch co-op
For pure handheld co-op with a single Switch and two Joy-Cons, it's actually the best version of the game. For everything else, the PS5 / Xbox Series version looks dramatically better.
Bottom Line
If you want to play LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga with a friend, you need to be sitting next to them. Two players, one screen, two controllers. There is no online multiplayer and no roadmap to add it.
