Star Wars Watch Order: Every Way to Watch the Saga (2026 Guide)

Five Ways to Watch Star Wars — Pick Yours

After 49 years, 12 theatrical films, 15+ TV series, and 250+ hours of canon, there is no single "right" Star Wars watch order. There are five viable orders, each optimized for a different viewer.

This guide gives you all five — with full timelines, BBY/ABY in-universe dates, runtimes, streaming availability, and the trade-offs of each. Pick the one that matches your goals, not the one a Reddit thread told you was "objectively correct." There is no objective.

If you're naming a character to roleplay through your watch-through, our Star Wars name generator covers every era you'll see below — from High Republic Jedi to First Order officers.

Quick Answer: Which Order Should You Pick?

    Viewer TypeRecommended OrderWhy
First-time viewerRelease OrderPreserves the Vader twist. The way Lucas designed it.
Lore obsessive / rewatchChronological OrderWatch history unfold in-universe. Best for context.
6-film purist (no sequels)Machete OrderThe prequels become an elegant Vader flashback.
Mandalorian / Grogu fanMando-Era FirstSkip straight to the live-action streaming era.
Kid-friendly introFamily-Friendly OrderAnimated leads, OT next, prequels later.

This is the order the films were released theatrically — and the order George Lucas's team designed the emotional payoffs around. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back's "I am your father" lands as a twist only in this order. Every other order spoils it.

Release Order — The Full List

    1. Star Wars (1977) — later retitled Episode IV: A New Hope — 121 min
    2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)Episode V — 124 min
    3. Return of the Jedi (1983)Episode VI — 132 min
    4. The Phantom Menace (1999)Episode I — 136 min
    5. Attack of the Clones (2002)Episode II — 142 min
    6. The Clone Wars (2008 film) — 98 min — optional bridge to the series
    7. Revenge of the Sith (2005)Episode III — 140 min
    8. The Force Awakens (2015)Episode VII — 138 min
    9. Rogue One (2016) — 133 min
    10. The Last Jedi (2017)Episode VIII — 152 min
    11. Solo (2018) — 135 min
    12. The Rise of Skywalker (2019)Episode IX — 142 min

Total runtime: ~26 hours of films.

Why Release Order Wins for Newcomers

    • The Vader twist stays a twist. Every other order spoils Empire Strikes Back's reveal.
    • The visual effects evolution is part of the story. Watching 1977 model work give way to 2000s digital give way to 2010s practical-plus-digital is itself thrilling.
    • You experience the saga the way an entire generation did. The OT was designed as a complete trilogy first.

    What to Add Between Films

Release order works fine films-only, but for the full Disney+ experience, insert these between releases:

    • Between III and VII: The Mandalorian S1–3, Andor S1–2, Obi-Wan Kenobi
    • Between VII and IX: The Last Jedi → Solo → Rise of Skywalker (with Ahsoka in between if you want context for Heir to the Empire–era stories)

Order 2: Chronological Order (Best for Lore Fans & Rewatches)

Chronological order follows in-universe time, measured in BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin, i.e. before A New Hope) and ABY (After the Battle of Yavin). The Battle of Yavin in 1977's Star Wars is "year zero."

    What's the Catch?

Chronological order spoils every twist. Vader's identity is revealed at the start of Revenge of the Sith (which you watch before Empire). Padmé's death is shown before her marriage matters. Snoke and Palpatine connections are pre-loaded.

Chronological is for viewers who already love the universe and want to see history unfold. It is not for first-timers.

Order 3: Machete Order (For 6-Film Purists)

Proposed in 2011 by Rod Hilton, the Machete Order watches: IV → V → II → III → VI. (Episode I is dropped entirely.)

The logic: after Empire's "I am your father," II and III become a flashback explaining Vader's fall. Then VI completes Luke's redemption arc and Anakin's. The Phantom Menace adds nothing the rest of the saga requires.

    Machete Order Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • Preserves the Vader twist.
    • Makes the prequels feel essential rather than padding.
    • Drops the weakest film (Episode I).
    • Total runtime: ~12 hours — the leanest serious watch order.

    Cons

    • Drops Darth Maul (a problem if you want to watch The Clone Wars or Solo later).
    • Pre-Disney era only. Sequels (VII–IX) and shows don't fit gracefully.
    • Skips Anakin's introduction as a child — some viewers find his fall less tragic without it.

    Modern Machete (2026 Update)

If you want Machete + Disney era:

    1. A New Hope
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Attack of the Clones
    4. Revenge of the Sith
    5. Return of the Jedi
    6. The Force Awakens
    7. Rogue One (out of chronology, but works as a palette cleanser)
    8. The Last Jedi
    9. The Rise of Skywalker

Optional Episode I bookend at the very end as standalone curio.

    Order 4: Mando-Era First (Live-Action Streaming Lead)

For viewers who came to Star Wars through The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, or Andor, this order starts with what hooked you and works outward.

    Mando-Era First Watch Plan

    1. The Mandalorian S1 (the on-ramp)
    2. A New Hope (oh, that's what the Empire fall was)
    3. The Empire Strikes Back
    4. Return of the Jedi
    5. The Mandalorian S2–3
    6. The Book of Boba Fett
    7. Ahsoka (pairs best after a Rebels skim; see Rebels essential episodes below)
    8. The Force Awakens → The Last Jedi → The Rise of Skywalker
    9. Backfill: Prequels (I, II, III), Rogue One, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi

Rebels Essential Episodes (If You're Skipping the Full Show)

    Before Ahsoka, watch at minimum:

    • Twilight of the Apprentice (S2 finale)
    • Twin Suns (S3)
    • A World Between Worlds (S4)
    • Family Reunion and Farewell (S4 finale)

For the full in-universe dating of each season, see our Star Wars Rebels timeline.

    Order 5: Family-Friendly Order (Kids 6+)

For introducing Star Wars to children, lead with animation and the OT. Save the heavy material (Order 66, Anakin's burn, Han's death) for older viewers.

    1. The Clone Wars (2008 film) — lighter tone, clear morality
    2. The Clone Wars S1–7 — pick highlight arcs first (Umbara, Mortis, Siege of Mandalore)
    3. Star Wars Rebels — explicitly designed for younger viewers
    4. Star Wars: Visions — anthology, easy entry points
    5. A New Hope → Empire → Return of the Jedi
    6. Skeleton Crew — built for tweens, the Star Wars equivalent of The Goonies
    7. The Mandalorian — Grogu wins over all kids

Hold off on Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One, and Andor until age 12+. Skip Solo's gambling scenes if very young.

BBY / ABY: How Star Wars Dates Its History

If you're watching chronologically, you'll see dates like "9 ABY" or "32 BBY" everywhere. Here's the cheat sheet:

    • BBY = Before the Battle of Yavin (the climax of A New Hope)
    • ABY = After the Battle of Yavin
    • Year zero = the destruction of the first Death Star

So Episode I (32 BBY) is 32 years before A New Hope. The Mandalorian (9 ABY) is 9 years after Return of the Jedi was 4 ABY, putting The Mandalorian 5 years after the Empire's fall.

This dating system shapes character naming in interesting ways — names from the High Republic era (200+ BBY) feel different from names in the New Republic (post-4 ABY). See our character name generator for era-specific names you can use while watching.

Watch Order for Roleplayers and Writers

If you're building a Star Wars roleplay, fanfiction, or D&D campaign, the era you pick determines tone, technology, and naming conventions:

What's Coming Next (Late 2026 and Beyond)

    Disney has confirmed:

    • The Mandalorian & Grogu theatrical film (2026)
    • Ahsoka Season 2 (2026)
    • Starfighter with Ryan Gosling (2027)
    • Untitled Daisy Ridley Rey-led film (2027)

Slot these into your chronological order at 9 ABY (The Mandalorian & Grogu, Ahsoka S2) and 35+ ABY (Rey film) once released.

    Common Watch Order Questions

Q: Can I skip the prequels?

You can, but you'll miss why Vader matters as a fallen Jedi rather than just a villain. If you skip, at minimum watch Revenge of the Sith (the strongest of the three).

Q: Can I skip the sequels?

Yes — the OT plus prequels is a complete arc on its own. Many fans treat VII–IX as optional. If you do watch, The Last Jedi divides fans most sharply.

Q: Should I watch The Clone Wars between Episodes II and III?

Yes, but skip filler. Use a "Clone Wars essentials" episode guide — there are ~40 must-watch episodes out of 133. The Umbara, Mortis, and Siege of Mandalore arcs are non-negotiable.

Q: Is there an "official" order from Lucasfilm?

No. StarWars.com lists the films by release date and the shows by air date. There is no canon-blessed watch order.

Q: What about Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)?

Curio only. Watch it for the camp value after you've done a full saga run — never as part of a real watch-through.

    Final Recommendations by Goal

    • You've never seen any of it?Release Order. Trust 49 years of fans.
    • You've seen the OT and prequels, want the full picture?Chronological with shows.
    • You loved Mando and want to understand it?Mando-Era First.
    • You want the leanest, classiest run?Modern Machete.
    • You're introducing a kid?Family-Friendly.

Whichever path you pick, pair it with a Star Wars character name of your own — a name to ride alongside Luke, Rey, Din Djarin, and the rest of the galaxy you're about to fall into.

May the Force be with you.
